In the dynamics of inequality, political parties play a vital role. Whether it is caste, class or livelihood a person in rural India needs to be affiliated to a certain political party or ideology to get benefits such as a loan from a bank, selling produce at a Government-owned producer organisation or even getting a job. Here in Polpully, Kerala, the role of a certain political party is such that it plays both ways. It helps a farmer get a loan during elections and puts pressure to repay after the elections. And unable to sustain the post-election pressure the farmer has no option but takes a drastic step and more often it is suicide.
