Bagepalli is a town in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. It is a semi-arid drought-prone town bordering Andhra Pradesh and is situated 100 km away from Bengaluru. Listed among 39 most backward taluks in Karnataka by the committee headed by Dr. D M Nanjubdappa, Bagepalli is currently on the path of slow and gradual development. Bagepalli has a population of 1,56,487 as per the 2011 India census, of which 87,084 represent the total workers. Being one of the most backward taluks, there are not many resources and job opportunities that Bagepalli can boast of; hence, most workers depend on nearby cities for jobs. 

An ordinary day of a daily wage worker in Bagepalli, a town in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka, begins in the hustle and bustle of the town, as they wait for employers to call them for work. The worker community here is dependent on rain based agriculture and other daily wage jobs in factories or construction sites. Due to the dry and rocky topography of Bagepalli, the cultivable land is less than one-half of the total land, thus providing fewer opportunities in the agricultural sector. Apart from the proximity factor, geographical and environmental conditions like the water crisis in Begapalli and drought in every fifth or sixth year, followed by near-famine conditions, also add to these workers’ misery.
